Muskogee is Banning Metal Roofs?

Metal RoofThere is some very interesting roofing news coming out of Muskogee, Oklahoma. According to Oklahoma’s News On 6, the town’s city council is working on banning metal roofs.

News On 6 covers this in a recent article titled “Muskogee Considers Ban On Metal Roofs In Neighborhoods.” Meagan Farley of News On 6 writes, “Muskogee homeowners could soon have fewer options when it comes to roofing material. City councilors are discussing whether to allow sheet metal roofing in residential areas. Doug Diebold, owner of Sooner Steel Sales, says he can’t afford to have sheet metal banned in certain areas. He thinks it’s a better product – and the ban could have a big effect on the community. ‘It’s 45 percent of my business,’ he said. ‘I always thought metal on the roof was the future, the way we were going.’ The city is considering a zoning change that would put an end to metal roofs and siding in neighborhoods. City Councilor Dan Hall says it was never meant to be that cut and dried. There had been some issues with lower quality work being done and city ordinances being met.”

FOX 23 adds some insight in a recent article titled “Plan to ban metal roofing in Muskogee sent back to the drawing board.” Eddie Randle of FOX 23 writes, “Residents told FOX23 they were very upset after finding out the proposed plan to ban the roofing on homes in the city limits. Many just want to know why. ‘I think they thought it would cause property value to go down within a neighborhood,’ said Muskogee’s Director of Planning Gary Garvin.
standards. Right now a house cannot have metal walls but the roofs can be metal. Councilors wanted to change that by proposing new homes have a decorative metal similar to shingles. Doug Diebold owns Sonner Steel Sales and said he’s been in the metal roofing business for the past 30 years. He said the proposed ordinance would put a serious dent in his business.”
