What’s the right roof for your home? It’s a question we have to ask ourselves before we begin a major investment in a roofing project. Niagara This Week seeks to make the decision process a little easier with a new article titled “How to choose the right roof for your home.”
According to the author, “You may be wondering what the right materials are you. That’s all a matter of roof design, budget, and preference. Fiberglass laminate shingles have a layer of synthetic material — glass fibre. This layer of glass fibre makes fibreglass shingles absorb less moisture and be more heat resistant than other products. Most homeowners go with this option as a solution for a poorly vented roof. They’re also more fire-resistant and thicker than asphalt shingles. Asphalt is the most inexpensive option, which makes them the most popular on the market.”
Another option is going with a cedar shake roof. A historic house in Illinois has made this choice as it gets set to reopen. Mary Cooley of the Belleville News-Democrat writes, “The official reopening will have to wait for inspections, but you can see the work to the Benjamin Stephenson House before that from South Buchanan Street. The Federalist-style house has a new cedar-shake roof recently completed by Taylor Roofing of Belleville. The $48,000 job was largely funded by a Parks Enhancement Project grant from Madison County. The Friends of the Stephenson House raised $8,000 to make up the complete cost. ‘Without this support, the house’s antique treasures would have been endangered,’ Carol Wetzel, a founding member of the Friends, said in a news release. The roof was last replaced in 2001, but the staples failed over time. That failure has a bit of history of its own, said Lynn Warren, of Henderson Architects.”
